National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

The Arc Mid-South hosted a 2-day workshop

Workshop 2014On March 6 & 7, The Arc Mid-South hosted a 2-day workshop at Anointed Temple of Praise Church designed for juniors and seniors in area high school special education classes. The focus of the workshop was the transition from high school to life after school.

The first day consisted of sessions on “Navigating through DIDD”, “Transitioning after High School”, and “Workforce Opportunities and Re-sources for Job Seekers.” Speakers from various specialty areas consisting of Gary Smith from the TN Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and Erica Lacey and Latasha Rayford from the State of TN Department of Rehabilitation Services provided insight to students from all geographical areas.

The second day, students were given an opportunity to hear first-hand from three individuals with disabilities who shared their views on overcoming the realities of having a disability. This discussion was lead by Liesl Becker and Brittany Carter, employees of The Arc Mid-South, along with Terrance Green, a Minister of Brown Missionary Baptist Church. We were also honored to have Susan Moss as Keynote speaker, from the TN Depart-ment of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to provide information on the programs and services pro-vided by DIDD.

The conclusion of the workshop consisted of an opportunity for students to visit with representatives from com-munity resources such as MATA Plus, University of Memphis TigerLife program, Disability Law, Job Linc, Brenda Richardson Memorial Care Homes, Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the TN Dept. of Labor Career Center.

More than one hundred and fifty students, teachers, and staff left the workshop more prepared for life after high school regardless of their chosen path.
