March Madness 2011

    In case you missed it!

The Arc kicked off National Developmental Disabilities Month in March with an event at Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis.  The Company d Dancers ( performed and The Miracles from The Baddour Center ( showcased their vocal talents.  March 1st was a special day for The Arc Mid-South, as we unveiled our new brand identity in concert with The National Arc.

The Arc also held our annual 2 day job readiness workshop at The Anointed Temple of Praise to prepare high school juniors and seniors with special education needs for “Life after high school.”  The event consisted of schools in the Memphis and Shelby County School Systems, and was a huge success.  The first day, workshop participants attended information sessions on a variety of topics from dressing for success, tips for interview success, and navigating ADA rights.  Speakers included Terrance Green of Brown Baptist Missionary Church, Fred Jones of MLGW, and Maurice Williams of University of Memphis.   The second day students had the opportunity to meet with potential employers in the community for mock interviews and employment opportunities.

The month concluded with the Annual Hoops from the Heart Basketball Tournament.  This year Hershey’s Company, Sam’s Club, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Support Solutions, and MASR (Mid-South Adaptive Sports) competed for the trophy and recognition as the annual “Hoops from the Heart” champions.  This annual event helps to bring disability awareness to the mid-south community.  The Rollin’ Grizzlies were there to assist in coaching teams and also to display their talents in the competition.  The participants consisted of individuals with and without disabilities.  Everyone enjoyed a good time!  The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department is the ‘2011 Hoops from the Heart champions!

Thank you to all who came out and volunteered to bring awareness to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Just because you missed the March events, doesn’t mean you can’t come out for fun in April!  Please see calendar of events for more details on the Special Needs Symposium and how you can help support The Arc by going out to see The Memphis Redbirds!
