National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

2013 The Arc Mid-south’s Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

The Arc Mid-South hosted its annual Wheelchair Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 2nd at the University of Memphis Elma Neal Roane Field House to bring awareness to National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Although there were a few snow flurries, that did not stop all the action from taking place.

During the tournament, corporate teams from Hershey's, Sam's Club, Inventory Locator Services, and National Bankers Trust competed against each other for the opportunity to play against The Rollin' Grizzlies, a Memphis based wheelchair basketball team affiliated with the Memphis Grizzlies. There were lots of laughs, fun and even a few falls!  Hershey's was the winner of the tournament again this year.

Executive Director Carlene Leaper of The Arc Mid-South, a well known advocate for people with disabilities in the Mid-South Community, said, "We are here today to showcase people's abilities, not their disabilities."  The Arc Mid-South's mission is to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to reach their full potential.

The Wheelchair Basketball Tournament was a fun filled day complete with fun cheerleaders, exciting games, and a great cause!  Even a couple of Grizz Girls came out!  Thanks to the corporate teams as well as the University of Memphis, Pepsi, Hershey's, The Rollin' Grizzlies, and NBT for their contributions and support.  All funds raised from the tournament will go to support the programs and services provided by The Arc Mid-South to people with disabilities.

Newcomers to the event, Inventory Locator Services (ILS) and National Bankers Trust (NBT)  learned a lot about how to handle a wheelchair and a basketball at the same time.  It's not about's about abilities.  Way to go teams!

Thank you Hershey's and Pepsi for your donations.

Thanks for all your support!
